A few years ago, I found myself sitting on the sidelines of a soccer field every weekend watching kids run up and down the field trying to kick the ball, pass to their teammates and get the ball in the goal. The night before I would be out playing shows or hanging with friends ’til early in the morning. So sometimes it would be hard to keep my eyes open from the lack of sleep the night before. But inevitably I would feed off the energy of the kids, their parents and the game in general and get into it. I was thinking to myself, “how did I get here?” I didn’t have any kids, yet, here I am screaming like a maniac. It helped that one of those kids was my nephew. Sitting on the sidelines of kids’ soccer games can get overheated pretty quickly. Parents need to chill out. But I was down for the cause.
So after a few weeks of going to the games I started noticing how passionate some of the parents really were about their kids playing soccer. Especially some of the moms. Giving strategy from the sidelines. They’d really get into it. It also helped that they were easy on the eyes, sort of like Victoria Beckham. It was funny to notice some of the other kids and dads take notice to the above mentioned moms. In a flash of inspiration I thought these moms needed a song. Something fun. Maybe I’ll write one. One day. One day…
A few years later, one afternoon while I was writing music, the soccer mom song idea popped into my head and I came up with a guitar riff. The chorus shot out effortlessly “She’s the bomb, I’m in love with a soccer mom.” I started laughing. What a ridiculous idea. But there was something there. Something fun and infectious about it. So in about 10 minutes I wrote the song. When the guys came over the next day to rehearse an upcoming show, I reluctantly talked about the soccer mom song I had written. They were up for hearing it. So I showed them the chord changes, lyrics and song structure and we let it rip. We were all cracking up. The song has a simple rock song structure played with lots of energy. I secretly was in love with it but I didn’t know if we would add it to the set and try it out. We all thought it was ridiculous and funny but really great. So we tried it out at shows and it went over really well. So well that eventually we ended up playing a pre-game show at the Home Depot Center before a LA Galaxy game because of it. One of the talent buyers for the LA Galaxy heard the song and flipped out over it. They created a “Soccer Mom” night specifically for us. When we did the concert there was a soccer mom pageant. Amazing! The show was a blast and we ended up playing the song 3 times in the 45 minute concert. We gave away “Soccer Moms Rock!” shirts like hotcakes. Even guys wanted the shirt. It was a great show! You can listen and download “Soccer Mom” for free!
We recorded “Soccer Mom” for our “Living The Dream” album and it’s been a song that gets requested quite a bit at our shows. At one show in particular we hadn’t planned on playing it since we were trying out new material. We finished the show and the crowd was upset, yelling for “Soccer Mom.” There was an uproar. People had driven a long way to see us and we hadn’t delivered THE song. The Soccer Mom song! At the time we had no idea the song had made that much of an impact. We ended up doing it for the encore but gave the song a twist. Slowed it down, made it intimate and I did it solo. It was fun. Everyone enjoyed it. So, is the song about Victoria Beckham or perhaps someone else? Maybe it’s about a mom you know. Maybe it’s about you. Well… you decide. Enjoy the official “Soccer Mom” lyric video.
